[Repost: March 2024]
Last week, I attended the III International Conference of Languages, Migrations and Cultures in C贸rdoba, Argentina 馃嚘馃嚪. I was eager to attend a conference that focused on minorized groups in movement to see how other communities managed to preserve their origins in the Americas 馃寧. It was very refreshing to see the various dynamics that are going on both to protect the indigenous local languages of the children whose families moved to metropolitan Spanish-speaking areas, as well as the strategies carried out to teach immigrants Spanish while learning from them and their roots (i.e., the Haitian community of Rosario) 馃棧馃嚟馃嚬
I presented a paper on the Basque diaspora of Boise, Idaho, as a case of linguistic and identitarian resistance to a cultural assimilation. This is the first paper I have ever presented in a Latin American country, and it was based on the conversations I had with four Basque-Americans via Zoom before I went in person in March for my thesis. 馃懇馃捇
One of the conclusions drawn from the interviews (later confirmed in March) is that, whereas for Basques of the Basque Country Basqueness lies in language knowledge and use, for the Basque-Americans, the value of family, ancestry, and community participation is central ⚾️馃獥馃┌. However, US-born 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation Basque-Americans have a tendency to take Basque classes and even go to the Basque Country to an immersive stay to relearn the language in their adulthood 馃洬馃實. Hence, my proposal is that the revitalization is cyclical since the youth is retaking the value of speaking Basque (even if they don't need it in the USA) 馃棧♻️馃嚭馃嚫
Thank you, @cilmic_2024 , and thank you everyone I got a chance to meet and exchange ideas with 馃. Hasta pronto! 馃懐♀️
