Changing language policy. Victory for minority languages at the Spanish congress

[REPOST FROM 14TH SEPTEMBER, 2023 - Victory for minority languages at the Spanish congress]

"Kaixo, all! In regards to yesterday's news, I just wanted to briefly say ESKERRIK ASKO 'thank you' for your support. It has been amazing to see in the last year, but especially yesterday (since it hits home), the ability that this community has to feel excited about other minorized languages' accomplishments. I don't think this sort of empathy is typical in many other circles, and it is something that we should be proud of. 🫶

We are not all at the same point. Each of us has different struggles in their communities due to legal, social or ideological obstacles; however, here we are, every day learning from each other and going forward. In the specific case of the Spanish congress, it is the first step (of many) to guarantee language rights for all minorized languages.

For the moment, the co-official languages (Galician, Basque, Catalan) will be available to use in the congress (2), along with Aragonese and Occitan. Nevertheless, the languages that are not official in their Autonomous Community (Astur-Leonese, Extemenian...) are not there yet (3). In any case, this will set a very important precedent in (European) language rights, which makes me very proud and hopeful (dangerous feelings for a dreamer 🫣).

Lastly, I wanted to remark that we are SO used to seeing only bad news that many of you asked me if these were indeed good ones. I feel you, I still don't believe it is real. We are so used to complaining, criticizing, and being angry that often we are not able to enjoy the good moments. Now, let's take a break and take a taste of this achievement. We deserve it. 🍰

Once again, eskerrik asko danori 'thank you all (Western Basque)' for taking a moment of your Wednesday to drop a message and many sweet words. Yesterday, we earned rights. Tomorrow, you will as well. ⚘️
