What is all the fuss with The Hand of Irulegi?

Irulegiko eskua is an archeological find from the 1st century BC. e It is a bronze hand-shaped plank with what seems to be a Basque text, since the first word can be read from current Basque. It was found in the excavations of the valley of Aranguren, next to the remainings of the old castle of Irulegi. It is located to the south of Iruñea, Navarre's capital, where currently Basque is not completly official.It dates back to the Iron Age. There had been previous findings, but there were words or names. This is written in northeastern Iberic, not Latin alphabet, which means that Basques might have had a writting system. However, it is object of debate. It was known that Basques acquired the writing system from the Romans, since many Aquitanian names were found with Latin declinations across the Basque nation. Basque-Americans in the USA: The Basque diaspora

Basque-Americans are descendants of Basque people in the U.S.A., an ethnic group indigenous to the Basque Country, a region located on both sides of the Pyrenees Mountains. Basque immigration to the United States increased in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to a combination of push and pull factors. One of the main reasons for immigration was the search for better economic opportunities. Basque Country was a rural area with limited industrialization and job opportunities, and many Basques saw the U.S. as a land of opportunity. As a result, many Basques settled in the western U.S. and found work in mining, sheepherding, ranching, and other industries. Political instability was another factor that contributed to Basque immigration. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Basque Country was a region of political unrest due to the terrible consequences of the World Wars (1914-18, 1939-45) in the north and due to the social instability and persecution during the Civil War...

Meeting Basques in Boise, Idaho

I spent these past days in Boise, Idaho. This wasn't just a weird destination for Spring Break, but it is where the biggest Basque community is located in the North American diaspora due to being a popular destiny to immigrating as shepherds. 🐑👨‍🦯 Although I never had any direct connection with Boise (none of my relatives immigrated there), it has always been a dream to go.✈️ For those who grew up in the Basque Country, and who adore our language and culture, it is always shocking to discover that this community kept some of their traditions alive, instead of fully adopting the US customs.
