What is an endangered language?

 


An endangered language is a language that is likely to becone extinct in the near future as its speakers die out or shift to other languages (UNESCO).



•These are the indicators of language endangerment:

-The number of living speakers

-The mean age of fluent speakers

-The percentage of the youngest generation acquiring the language

As a result, out of around 6000 languages of the world, at least 2571 are endangered (UNESCO).
